Position Summary

The Grant Writer is responsible for conducting prospect research, identifying funding sources and developing sophisticated, compelling, high-quality grant and gift proposals to maximize support for projects and priorities identified by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation (TPWF). This position reports to the Associate Philanthropy Director.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Generate revenue through developing, preparing and submitting compelling, high-quality grant and gift proposals.
  • Manage and adhere to a comprehensive proposal calendar that tracks submissions, upcoming deadlines, and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and submit grant reports.
  • Identify, research and analyze new and existing donors and prospects for gift cultivation and solicitation through review and strategic analysis of media, financial documents, files, databases, online information systems and other resources.
  • Prepare thorough, accurate and concisely written prospect research reports of individuals; as well as research on corporations and foundations.
  • Help identify, qualify and strategically prioritize grant funding opportunities for TPWF.
  • Monitor proposal progress ensuring receipt by funders and tracking funding award decisions.
  • Design, prepare and distribute regular reports regarding grant and gift proposal production and award success rates.
  • Partner with philanthropy team to provide timely, accurate and analytical information to aid in the development of prospect strategies and plans.
  • Maintain constituent confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the mission, values, strategic goals, and programs of TPWD and TPWF.
  • Provide skilled editorial assistance, editing and proofreading materials as requested.

Preferred Background and Skills

  • Two to four years' experience in prospect research and grant writing is preferred. Experience in Texas conservation initiatives a plus. 
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft office including Power Point, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to handle an extensive and diverse workload while maintaining a positive perspective.
  • A strong work ethic, sense of urgency, attention to detail, and ability to think independently.
  • Ability to interface with individuals at every level of an organization, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to, plan for, and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced setting.
