Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and organized individual to join our team as a director of development. In this role, you will be responsible for a comprehensive philanthropy strategy to ensure significant financial resources from foundations, corporations, and individuals to support our organization's mission and work. You will oversee the development, coordination, and implementation of all fundraising, including large-scale fundraising events, grants, major gifts, planned giving, and donor relations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop the overall development strategy and execute annual fundraising plan to meet fundraising goals.
  • Work closely with the senior director of communications as co-leaders of the development and communications (DevComm) team.
  • Work closely with the president and director of finance and operations to develop and maintain annual operating budget.
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team and provide input for the direction of the organization, working with other directors to make decisions, problem-solve, and set goals.
  • Direct the planning and execution of large-scale annual fundraising events, managing event budgets and timelines, delegating to the team as appropriate, working with event chairs and committee members, soliciting sponsors, and coordinating with vendors.
  • Work collaboratively with and directly supervise development and volunteer manager on all aspects of fundraising and donor relations, and work closely with events and marketing manager to plan and execute high-quality events.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective and existing donors, strengthen relationships with corporate and foundation partners, and engage Board of Directors to support these efforts.
  • Collaborate with senior director of communications to keep donors informed on the impact of their contributions and to reflect the work and goals of the organization to the funding community.
  • Develop major gift and planned giving programs and educate donors on these opportunities.
  • Oversee grant application process, including researching available grant options, writing grant proposals, maintaining the grant calendar, tracking budgets and outcomes, and ensuring proper reporting of funded proposals.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to spend time seated, the dexterity to perform computer keyboard functions, the ability to stand for long periods of time, and the ability to lift 50 pounds.

The employee must have reliable transportation.

FLSA: Exempt – Salaried; Full Time

Compensation: $75,000 - $85,000 (commensurate with experience)

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as nonprofit management, business administration, or communication), with at least five years of proven effectiveness in nonprofit fundraising.
  • Demonstrated track record of securing $2,000,000 or more in annual operating funds through a variety of sources.
  • Experience in directing annual giving campaigns, grant-writing, and special events.
  • History of working with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, and donors and managing direct reports as a positive, inspiring team leader.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a variety of constituents.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications, CRMs, AP style; proficiency using web-based software for project management; experience with Bloomerang, OneCause, DonorPerfect, Adobe Creative Suite or Canva a plus.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Familiarity with data protection regulations and privacy best practices.
